The Good, The Bad, and The Naked

May 20th, 2012 marks the 101st running of the Bay to Breakers cross city race in San Francisco. Originally organized to lift spirits after the 1906 earthquake and subsequent fires, the 12 kilometer event is now famous, or infamous to many residents that live along the course path, for raucous partying, contestants in costume, and more nudity than a Turkish bath house. Although it has been tamed considerably in the years since the 2009 public intoxication crackdown, the event’s party vibe lives on. With race day “bare”-ing down on us, we take a look at the Bay To Breakers by the numbers: the good, the bad, and, of course, the naked.

The Good

Often lost amongst the rolling kegs, lack of clothing, and public urination is that fact that the Bay To Breakers is actually a race. Serious, world class athletes compete, in 1994 runners were allowed to use their official time to qualify for the Olympic trials, and running enthusiasts enjoy the challenge. In fact, the course record of 33:31, set by Sammy Kitwala in 2009, is tied for the world’s best 12k time. Here are a few other statistics that make this race great:

1.75 million – the estimated number of total participants in the race’s first 100 years

13 – number of runners tied together to form a centipede, a phenomenon that first appeared in 1978

55,000 – the number of registered participants in 2011, the 100th consecutive year the race has been held

100,000 – how many spectators are expected to view the event

1,200 – the number of portable toilets available this year, up from 705 in 2009

10 – age of the youngest winner in the history of the race

110,000 – The number of participants in the 1986 race that set a Guiness Book World record for the largest footrace

5 – The number of different charities participants and spectators can donate to

The Bad

Given the sheer number of spectators and participants involved, any event of this size would be subject to some hijinks and general tomfoolery. However, with the added elements of a high level of alcohol consumption and extremely low (and often non-existent) inhibitions, the Bay To Breakers is rife with stories of lewd and lascivious acts, inebriated individuals, and, the occasional doorstep defecation.

50 – Estimated percentage of participants considered “bandits” – those who do not register or pay fees

18 – tons of garbage removed after the 2010 race

25 – arrests during the 2011 festivities, 17 for public intoxication

26 – people hospitalized for alcohol poisoning in 2010

30 – the number of feet one man fell after celebrating on a rooftop in 2011. He suffered life- threatening injuries as a result

360 – police officers that will be lining the course in 2012

The Naked

While many people may view the presence of nude runners as one of the “bad” aspects of the race, it is no doubt a part of what sets the Bay To Breakers apart from other footraces. City laws of decency are relaxed during the race, exposing San Francisco in all it’s quirky glory and allowing those who are so inclined to let their flag fly…or flop. Groups of nude exercise enthusiasts have even been formed, the Bare To Breakers being the largest and most popular. Most of them wear socks, hats or fanny packs and, thus, are not considered completely naked. Race regulations do require clothing when crossing the finish line.

1978 – The first year someone decided to run naked. Lesli Josephson had a few cocktails and did “what felt natural”

100-300 – The number of nude racers estimated to participate each year

6 – Number of naked participants arrested in 1993 the first year Bare To Breakers ran as a group

0 – The number of people who will be able to forget the first time they see a naked guy with a fanny pack run by them

Regardless of your views on public nudity, the Bay To Breakers footrace is entrenched as an important San Francisco tradition. While it may have its flaws, (drunk, naked flaws) it brings people together for a celebration like few events can. Or should.
