Three Charged In Beating Of Midtown Bar Employee

Houston, TX –Three men have been arrested and charged with felony aggravated assault after beating up an employee of a Midtown bar. Grant Woodruff, Joseph Arcidiacono and Steven Weil were all charged with the crime. The incident occurred at The Celtic Garden bar in the 2300 block of Louisiana on Dec.20. The three men entered the bar and an employee of the bar asked Arcidiacono for his ID to verify his age. Arcidiacono refused and the employee asked him to leave. Amtrak Derails After Hitting Semitrailer Stuck On Tracks

Leoni Township, Mich.— Ten people were injured when an Amtrak train hit a semitrailer that was stuck on the tracks in southern Michigan. The train which was traveling from Pontiac, Michigan to Chicago had 68 passengers and 5 crew members. After the train struck the semitrailer, the engine came to rest on its side and the first two train cars derailed. Seven passengers, the driver of the truck, the train engineer and another crew member were injured in the accident. None of the injuries was thought to be life-threatening. All of injured were taken to a hospital in Jackson. The accident occurred around 8:30 a.m. when the truck that was carrying equipment for local oil production got stuck on the tracks and couldn’t move. Elementary Teacher Arrested For Molesting 23 Children

Los Angeles, CA — An elementary school teacher who worked in Los Angeles for over 30 years has been arrested for allegedly molesting almost two dozen children. Mark Berndt, 61, worked at Miramonte Elementary School in south Los Angeles. A photo processing store gave police photos of students in bondage pictures. The police launched an investigation after seeing the pictures. Female students were shown blindfolded, with tape over their mouths, and with a blue plastic spoon with a clear, white liquid in front of their mouth. Other children had live cockroaches on their faces. Berndt was in some of the photos with his arm around the children. The ages of the students in the pictures range between 7 and 10 years old. Police searched Berndt’s home and his classroom. They found evidence of the sex crimes in both places. Most, 26, of the children in the photographs have been identified, ten have not. Berndt was fired from the school district in March 2011. He was arrested and charged with 23 felony counts of lewd acts upon a child on Monday. He is being held on $2.3 million in bail. Teen Dies After Fall From Chairlift

Salt Lake City, UT —A 19-year-old student suffered a seizure, fell from a chairlift and died at a Park City ski resort. Asha Davenport, a University of Utah student, fell 30 feet from the lift at the Canyons Resort. The ski patrol arrived quickly, but her injuries were too severe. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Asha was skiing there with friends on Sunday. It is unknown if the safety bar was down at the time, but the lifts were working normally. Deaths and injuries on chairlifts are rare. San Diego, CA — A 29-year-old woman was arrested Friday at her parents Rancho Penasquitos home. She was involved in a traffic accident that resulted in the death of a young woman and the California Highway Patrol decided the crash was her fault. Jorene Nicolas, the suspected distracted driver, denies that she was texting at the time of the accident. The crash occurred last April and killed Deanna Mauer of Orange County. Pilot Dies After Being Hit By Propeller

San Diego, CA — The propeller of a light plane struck a pilot in the head and killed him on Monday. The 41-year-old pilot and a passenger began to taxi a single-engine plane out to the runway when the engine stalled. The pilot got out of the cockpit and was attempting to hand-crank the plane at the time of the accident. 2 People Injured In Freon Leak At Costco

Glenview, IL –A Costco store was closed and two people were injured when a pipe containing Freon was broken inside the store. Firefighters were called to the 2900 block of Patriot Blvd. when some store workers broke a pipe containing Freon in the bakery department. The store was closed and two employees were taken to Glenbrook Hospital. Costco was able to repair the pipe and the store was reopened around 4 p.m. Building inspectors were called to the scene. Freon displaces oxygen and is something you do not want to breathe, but it is not extremely hazardous.

Workers Injured When Floor Collapses

Cincinnati, OH — At least a dozen workers were injured at a construction site on Friday when the floor collapsed. The incident occurred at the Horseshoe Casino on Jan 27, 2012. The same developer had a similar accident just a few weeks ago at a casino in Cleveland. None of the injuries were thought to be life-threatening, but eleven workers were taken to the hospital. The crew was pouring concrete on a section of the second floor when a beam supporting the floor gave away. The floor fell and the workers who were on the second floor fell also. Fortunately no one was underneath the floor at the time. The casino is being built by Messer Construction Co. and the co-developer is Rock Gaming LLC. OSHA is investigating the accident and work has been halted at the site, until it is safe. The Horseshoe Casino is supposed to open in spring 2013.
