Fullerton city council members are holding a special meeting today, Friday, to discuss whether to start an inquiry into 37-year-old Kelly Thomas’s death. His father, a former sheriff’s deputy filed a claim against the police on Thursday.

On July 22 jurors convicted Anthony Sowell of 11 counts of aggravated murder and more than 70 other charges including abusing corpses and kidnapping. Today, Wednesday, those same jurors unanimously voted to sentence Sowell to the death penalty. Ultimately the decision belongs to Cuyahoga County Judge Dick Ambrose who will give his decision on Friday at 9 a.m.

A Columbia woman and her 5-year-old son were injured Monday night when she drove her Ford Escape off the bridge into the bank of a creek near Wilcox Road off of Route E. The woman, Elizabeth Klaus, 32, was taken by paramedics to University Hospital, and was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated following the accident. This was her third arrest for DUI. Judge David Rimmer sentenced a Ronnie L. Henley, 50, to 20 years in prison due to a DUI Manslaughter conviction on Tuesday. Henley now faces 20 years in prison, 15 of which go to the DUI manslaughter, 20 for fleeing the scene of a crash involving death, and time for possession of marijuana.
Last year, he was arrested after a traffic accident where he turned in front of a motorcyclist who was pronounced dead at the scene.

A lawsuit was filed today in federal court in Detroit by a woman who says that two Westland police officers beat her while she was in a holding cell. The woman is seeking $2 million in damages.
The woman’s lawyer says that a video of the incident that he made public today proves that the officers were not responding to an attack by his client as police allege and that his client is telling the truth.

The alleged gunman who injured two students at a Carlsbad elementary school is to be arraigned Wednesday on multiple felony charges of attempted murder.
The gunman, Brendan O’Rourke, 41, is scheduled for arraignment in the Vista branch of San Diego County Superior Court. He is charged with dressing up in black and screaming incoherently while he attacked and wounded two students at Kelly Elementary School on Friday after climbing a fence on to the school playground.
O’Rourke is being held without bail at the County Jail in Vista.

Stephen Wesley, 43, a former substitute teacher at a juvenile probation camp was arrested Tuesday for supervising a series of fights between students in rival gangs, authorities said.
Los Angeles County sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said Wesley, 43, set rules and told students not to punch each other in the face to avoid obvious signs of injury.
“Wesley not only allowed the fights to take place but also encouraged them by setting ground rules, including time limits,” Whitmore said. “He directed the minors where to fight in the room.”

Dallas police have issued a warrant for a 19-year-old suspect for a fatal shooting which happened on Monday.
According to police, Alberto Deleon is wanted in the death of Ray Villasenor, 18. Mr. Villasenor was shot on the evening of Oct. 13 during an argument following a car accident in near South Beacon Street, police said. A second person was also wounded in the shooting, police said.
