ANCHORAGE—A 36-year-old Anchorage mother went on trial Wednesday morning for the charge of misdemeanor child abuse.
Jessica Beagley and husband, a police officer, adopted two young boys from Russia. The boys, age 7, are twins who had been in an orphanage in Russia for three years after being abandoned by their parents. The Beagleys have four biological children. Jessica Beagley began having trouble disciplining the boys when they lied and misbehaved in school. She said traditional methods of discipline did not work.

San Diego — Los Angeles Laker Kobe Bryant was with his wife at St. Therese of Carmel Valley church in Carmel this past Sunday when he thought someone near him was taking his picture with a cell phone. Kobe grabbed the cell phone from the man’s hand and looked to see if there were pictures of him. There were no pictures of him and Kobe returned the phone.

TAMPA — Acting on a tip from an informant, police arrested a teen for planning a bomb attack at a local high school. The student, Jared Cano,17, who had been expelled from Freedom High School in 2009 was discovered with bomb-making material at his home. Police learned from the informant that the attack was planned for the first day of school, August 23.
Cano has multiple juvenile arrests, which have included burglary, carrying a concealed weapon, altering serial numbers on a firearm and drug possession. All have been either …

Dr. Kevin Brown, a Los Angeles physician and son of a former premier of Bermuda, was found guilty Monday on 21 charges which included sexual battery by fraud, sexual exploitation by a physician and lewd act upon a child. He was accused of assaulting nine female patients, including a 15-year-old and an undercover police officer.

KENNETT, Mo. -Shawn Morgan has been charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action and tampering with evidence in the disappearance of 3-year-old Breeann Rodriguez. Morgan, 43, was a neighbor and is the father of three. Breeann disappeared on Aug. 6 from her neighborhood which is located about 200 miles south of St. Louis.

On July 22 jurors convicted Anthony Sowell of 11 counts of aggravated murder and more than 70 other charges including abusing corpses and kidnapping. Today, Wednesday, those same jurors unanimously voted to sentence Sowell to the death penalty. Ultimately the decision belongs to Cuyahoga County Judge Dick Ambrose who will give his decision on Friday at 9 a.m.

A Columbia woman and her 5-year-old son were injured Monday night when she drove her Ford Escape off the bridge into the bank of a creek near Wilcox Road off of Route E. The woman, Elizabeth Klaus, 32, was taken by paramedics to University Hospital, and was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated following the accident. This was her third arrest for DUI.
