A former elementary school teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School District is accused of sexually abusing at least twenty students. 57 year-old Robert Pimentel who taught at George de la Torre Jr. Elementary was arrested by Los Angeles police detectives after undergoing an investigation that started in March of 2012. The investigation stemmed from multiple fourth grade girls telling parents that Pimentel had inappropriately touched them.
Fifteen charges have bee filed against Pimentel by the prosecution. The charges, involving a dozen alleged victims and covering the span of time from September 2011 to March 2012, include sexual abuse and lewd acts on children. Pimentel is suspected of inappropriately touching the young children under and over their clothing.
Los Angeles Schools Superintendent John Deasy reported that there were allegations against Pimentel that arose in 2002 and in 2008, but there is no record of the allegations going further that schools where Pimentel worked at the time. Los Angeles Unified School District policy states that school employees are required to report allegations of sexual misconduct to the police and to their supervisors.
In March, Pimentel resigned from his position before the process to finalize his termination could be completed. Pimentel who began working in the district in 1974 is currently being held on $12-million bail.
Pimentel is not the only elementary teacher to be charged with sexual abuse in Los Angeles in recent time. In December 2012 a Los Angeles jury awarded a young victim of molestation a verdict of $23 million as result of sexual abuse from the child’s former elementary school teacher, Forrest Stobbe. Los Angeles Attorneys Estey & Bomberger are credited with securing this verdict for the victim. The verdict is believed to be the largest settlement ever leveraged against the LAUSD for a single victim.
