22 February 2012 No Comment

Sacramento, CA –A federal lawsuit was filed on Wednesday by 19 students and alumni of UC Davis who were pepper sprayed and roughed up by campus police last November.  The suit also claims that their free speech rights were violated.  The incident occurred on Nov. 18 during a demonstration on campus.  The students were part of the Occupy movement. They were protesting the latest tuition increases and the use of force by UC Berkeley police.  Campus police sprayed the students with pepper spray as the sat or crouched on the ground.  The incident was caught on video and went viral on the internet.  The suit names the campus police officers, UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi, and other campus administrators as defendants.  They are seeking financial damages and policy changes in how the university handles protests.  The case was filed in U.S. District Court’s Eastern District of California and is expected to be heard in a Sacramento court.  The American Civil Liberties Union is helping the students.  If you believe your civil rights have been violated, contact an attorney today to evaluate your case.
