17 January 2012 No Comment

Santa Ana, CA –Itzcoatl “Izzy” Ocampo was charged with four counts of murder today for the killing of four homeless men. The charges include special allegations of multiple murders, lying in wait and use of a deadly weapon. The minimum sentence if convicted is life in prison without parole. Ocampo would be eligible for the death penalty if convicted, but it is unknown if the district attorney will seek it.  The four men who were stabbed to death are James Patrick McGillivray, 53, killed in Placentia on Dec. 20; Lloyd Middaugh, 42, who was found in Anaheim on Dec. 28; Paulus Smit, 57, in Yorba Linda on Dec. 30; and John Berry, 64, who was found behind a fast food restaurant in Anaheim on Jan. 13.  Each of the victims was stalked as Ocampo waited for the right time to commit the murders.  The victims were each stabbed dozens of times.  The knife used in the killings was a 7-inch, single-edge blade made of heavy gauge metal.  Ocampo was caught by two men after he killed Berry. When he was caught he had blood on his hands and face.  He is a former Marine who had just served six months in Iraq.  Ocampo is being held in isolation at an Orange County jail and he is being watched 24 hours a day.
