Retired Firefighter Attacked By Pit Bulls
GLENDORA, CA– Milford Fonza, a retired fire chief, was out for his morning walk around 4 a.m. on Monday, when two pit bulls attacked him. Fonza was trying to beat off the dogs with his walking stick when a Glendora police officer, Matt Fenner, saw him and helped. Fonza was trying to get away from the dogs by pulling himself over a wall, but the dogs kept pulling him back down. He said the dogs were relentless and he believed he was going to be killed. Fenner hit one dog with his police car and called for assistance from other police officers. Then he got out of his car to and shot the other dog. The dog who had been hit by the car ran away. Other Glendora police officers contained the injured dog until animal control officers could arrive on the scene. The dog was tranquilized and taken to a veterinary clinic where it later died. Glendora Animal Control was trying to locate the dogs’ owners. Fonza was transported by ambulance to a local hospital and was treated for puncture wounds to his face, arms, torso, legs and groin. He also suffered a possible separated or broken shoulder when the two dogs pulled him off the wall.

Chief Fonza is my brother, and we his family would like to send our thanks, our gratitude to Officer, Matt Fenner, for being there at the right time to save our brother, it was by the grace of God that he happened to be on patrol at that time or else our brother would have been dead, what a tragedy that would have been, we lost our beloved nephew on Sunday and this happens to our brother on Monday, I don’t think that our 98 year old mother would have been able to with stand the grief. But thank God of Officer Fenner and I only pray that this does not happen to anyone else. These attacks by pit bulls need to stop, these dogs that attacked my brother were trained to attacks by their owners, what if it was a child that got attacked by those two pit bull? Only God knows. All I can keep saying is thank God for my brother’s life and of the Office who saved him.
