School bus accident in Wellsville KS leaves nine people injured
A school bus accident in Eastern Kansas left nine people injured. The bus was traveling from a church camp on their way back to Missouri. According to reports the accident occurred along Interstate 35 near Wellsville at around 10 a.m.
Thirty-four people, including the driver, four teenage counselors and 20 children were on the bus at the time. Reports state the bus was returning from a Baptist church camp in Franklin County. Reasons are still unknown why the bus turned over.
Eight children were rushed to area hospitals by ambulance for treatment of injuries. These injuries included broken bones and back and neck pain, including cuts and bruises. According to authorities one child was airlifted to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City for treatment. The child suffered critical injuries and the current condition at the time of the report was unknown.
The cause of the accident is being investigated by Kansas Highway Patrol and officials believe the bus driver may have over corrected, causing the bus to roll before it came to a rest in the northbound lanes of the highway.
