Man identified in crash with FrontRunner
Investigators have identified a man killed in a crash with a FrontRunner. The accident occurred when he tried to beat an oncoming commuter train by driving around barrier arms and onto a railroad crossing .
Charles Dubose, 52, of West Haven, was killed when the train traveling 79 mph crashed into his pickup at 7:57 p.m. Monday, the Utah Highway Patrol said.
Reports state that no major injuries were reported to either the operator or riders on the Utah Transit Authority’s FrontRunner train . However, one passenger sustained some minor bumps and bruises in the crash.
According to UHP Trooper, Todd Johnson, Dubose drove around and through the crossing barriers at 1800 North in Sunset. The train had no time to slow down, plowing into the pickup truck’s passenger side.
The accident caused quite a bit of wreckage from the pickup that was strewn over an area roughly four blocks long.
Dubose was pro
nounced dead at the scene and was the only one in the vehicle.
After the accident the tracks were cleared and passengers on Frontrunner were detoured by bus around the accident scene.
Gerry Carpenter, a UTA spokesman, stated the operator of the train was visibly “shaken and upset” by the accident, but uninjured. The man is on paid administrative leave pending a mandated investigation into the crash, and he will be offered counseling services, if he desires them.
