Authorities reported that a van carrying athletes from California Baptist University in Riverside was involved in a fiery collision near Bishop on Monday night.  At least six people were killed and 12 others injured in the accident.

The van was one of three university vehicles heading northbound on U.S. Highway 395 about five miles south of Bishop when a Ford SUV traveling in the opposite direction lost control shortly after 8 p.m. Officer Dennis Cleland of the California Highway Patrol state the SUV smashed into one of the vans and immediately burst into flames.

Another van that was traveling right behind the CBU van was able to avoid the collision, but unfortunately another vehicle behind it struck the burning SUV according to Cleland.  Five of the fatalities were inside the SUV and one was inside the van.

“There could be more fatalities, but we’re trying to sort that out,” Cleland said.  Investigators were still at the scene and no further details were reported.  The accident is still under investigation.
