Koppel’s son found dead in apartment
Ted Koppel’s son was found dead early Monday morning in a Washington Heights apartment on Audobon Avenue. Police found Andrew Koppel unconscious around 1:30a.m. and they believe it was a “daylong drinking binge.”
The exact cause of the 40-year-old’s death has yet to be determined. Police officials are awaiting the autopsy results before citing a cause.
Reports state that Koppel began drinking at Smith’s Bar and Restaurant in Manhattan on Sunday afternoon. Koppel then met up with another man and continued to drink with him at several other bars around the area. After, Koppel and the man went back to the Washington Heights apartment.
Koppel lived in Queens with his girlfriend and daughter.
The man drinking with Koppel was Russell Wimberly according to the New York Post. Wimberly was drinking with Koppel throughout the night and stated that Koppel was drinking whiskey and neither of them had anything to eat all day long.
Wimberly and Koppel ended the night at the the apartment that belonged to Wimberly’s friend and told Koppel to sleep off his drunken state. At the apartment Koppel got sick and wasn’t breathing when Wimberly discovered him sometime after they had arrived at the apartment. Wimberly and the apartment owner called 911.
The death is still being investigated and drugs and/or alcohol are suspected to be contributing factors. There were no immediate signs of criminality.
