Save Aaron Vargas? Murderer or Hero?

8 April 2010 10 Comments

What would you do if you had a chance to avenge someone who molested you? If you were looking them eye to eye after years of living as a victim, would you walk away? Or would you  avenge the crime that happened to you and possibly many others.

Aaron Vargas, 32, claims that his Boy Scout leader Darrell McNeill started molesting him when he was 11-years-old and that he and what happened emotionally tormented him as an adult. So on the night of February 8, 2009 Aaron Vargas drove to McNeill’s house and shot him right in front of his wife.

Vargas has now pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter with the use of a gun and now waits to see what sentence he will receive for the crime; it could be anywhere from 10 years down to probation. He was to stand trial for first-degree murder next week. Vargas’ sentence decision will come on April 20.

Who is Darrell McNeill?

Darrell McNeill was a family friend of the Vargas family and was former Boy Scout leader and local businessman in Fort Bragg. However, other men in the community support Vargas’ actions and say that McNeill used his position as Boy Scout leader to take the boys on hikes and camping trips, give them alcohol and drugs, and molest them.

Vargas’ family has been diligent about raising awareness of child sexual abuse since Aaron Vargas’ arrest.

Mendocino County Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth Norman said that four people have lodged reports against McNeill for sexual abuse and that was enough to strike a plea deal for Vargas.

McNeill’s wife said that although she could not condone what Arron Vargas did, she did understand it and thinks he should serve some time for his crime, but not much. She said she had no reason to doubt Aaron’s claim of abuse.

Todd Rowan, another molestation victim, claims McNeill molested him when he was 15 and continued until he was 19. He said McNeill would give him pot and beer and take advantage of the fact that he was a loner kid with few friends. He said that what McNeill did to him drove him to drugs and repeated suicide attempts.

So what do you think? Should he walk or serve for the crime? Here is a website if you want to support Aaron www.saveaaron.com. If you don’t, I guess you will have to wait for the sentencing.

I would have done the same thing. Bastards that molest kids all deserve to die. Release the guy!

I say this piece of crap deserved to die. If it was me that got molested though I’m pretty sure I would have used a hockey stick to shove up his ass before he died. People like this deserve to die and get their junk chopped off. Good for this toothless killer. He did what needed to be done.

I think what McNeill did was horrid, but in a civilized society you can’t just go shooting people to settle your issues. My brother was abused by a religious figure for 6 years and he moved on with his life and didn’t dwell on the past. He didn’t start shooting priests or blowing up churches. I think Aaron should be sentenced to an indeterminate amount of time in a mental institution. If murder was the only solution he could see, he shouldn’t be turned back on society. The whole thing is sad, but………………..you can’t use frontier justice to solve things.

I think he needs to be home and in counciling. I wonder how much the molesters wife really knew. It’s odd with everything she stands for Aaron and not her husband. Think about that.

Aaron had a homosexual relationship with the deceased as an adult. The childhood sexual abuse was never proven. Sometimes it can’t be proven but that doesn’t mean an individual can then take the law into his or her own hands. If the deceased had been guilty of abusing a child, he isn’t here to defend himself against any allegations, his stated pattern was to molest boys and pedophiles exhibit a prefrence. Therefore, Aaron wouldn’t have any reason to worry about his daughter, his excuse, and could anyway easily keep her away from the man because Aaron is a grown man. He went there with a gun so he clearly had intent but also denies that. Perhaps the deceased was had chosen to end their homosexual affair or Aaron was afraid it would be exposed so he made up the abuse. Regardless, Aaron is a murderer. He may be happy the man is dead and though should then spend that happy life in prison.

Elisabeth J. I am in the same boat as you. If he killed him after the 1st or 2nd time then ok. But after all the years passed. I think you might have hit the nail on the head.I was molested so I know what its like but when he was gone I never looked back and my life is fine. Some bad stuff happens in life you just have to let it go.

Some think a more immediate response was more acceptable for a plea of leniency. How, can you rush to judgment unless you or yours were vicitimized. Sometimes, it takes years for molestation victims to analyze their feelings and thoughts. Aberrant behavior patterns start to emerge like the young man who tried to commit suicide. Victims can’t fully analyze what is making them crazy. I can’t explain why it takes some victims longer than others. But, I know those that do not get treatment sometimes never get a grip on their lives. Molestation is something that victims grapple with until the day they die. Oprah was a victim. On her website today, she has pukes she interviews who were child molesters. Victims never stop dealing with mental issues. Aaron should not receive any jail time. The molester was responsible for killing the spirit of children. He used his position and money to ruin their lives. His wife knew he was a predator. We have laws but anybody who reads the story, knows that Aaron did a service for society.

Arron was a victim. The police all over the country are guilty of cover ups. So long as women and children are the victims, the police do nothing. This outrage has to change. Please sign the petition to help ALL the women and children at

Iremember a man in a western state who was captured by police and had to be extridited to another state to face chrges, this man molested the daughter of another man, well the father was in the airport waiting for the transfer and was waiting as if on a pay telephone. When the deputies walked by the the father (who they didn’t know was at the airport waiting) the father of the daughter hung up the phone pulled out a very large pistol, walked up to the molester and shot him in the head point blank. This man had a very severe case of revenge on his mind and exacted it…….I say good for him, he was given probation, needless to say the molester died. I have no quarems about shooting a child abuser or anyone who sexually assaults another, (it’s called forced fornication)also known as rape, The judge said it would give a message to vigilantes of sexual abuse a message that it would be ok to do such things if not a jail sentence wasn’t handed out, I say, your giving the molesters/rapists permission to do these things for they are rarely caught and prosecuted SO WHAT GOOD IS THE SEXUAL PREDATORS LIST THEN???, So if you now of one……..Shoot him/her before he gets to your kid or adult family member, for the couts don’t recognize it, probably because they’ve never had a child of there own molested!!!!!

Bravo to you Aaron, you did a mitzvah. That piece of shit got what he deserved, I wish him well and I hope he gets pardoned, and it is unfortunate a jury would convict him. Anyone who molests a child is scum from the earth and deserves to go straight to hell, hopefully this is where McNeill lies.
