Camas man dies in truck accident
A 21-year-old Camas man died after his truck rolled into a remote pit near Larch Mountain. man died early Sunday morning when the ground beneath his truck’s tires gave way and he tumbled into a pit near Larch Mountain.
John D. Totton, 21, drove his truck to the edge of Jackson Pit, when the ground beneath his trucks’s tires gave way sending his truck down into the pit and ejecting him, according to Sgt. Shane Gardner.
Gardner said that several people who witnessed the accident called in, attempting to provide directions to the location. The accident occurred at about 3:18 a.m. Sunday morning according to Clark Regional Emergency Services.
Responders called in a helicopter to airlift Totton but he died before a Life Flight helicopter could be activated, Gardner said.
A preliminary investigation found that alcohol may have been a factor. Authorities believe Totton was driving the 2000 Toyota pickup truck that was pulled to the edge of the pit. According to Sgt. Gardner he was not wearing a safety belt.
An investigation is being conducted by detectives from Clark County’s homicide and traffic division. A toxicology report is not expected back for several weeks.
