Bus driver involved in Metro wreck at fault

16 March 2010 No Comment

After preliminary results of the investigation of Monday’s accident involving a Houston Bus and transit train the Metropolitan Transit Authority officials have found that its bus driver, Debra Harrison,  was at fault in the accident for running a red light.

The Metro bus’ security camera shows an image of a red light that Harrison entered into indicating that Harrison ran the red light and hit the train.   The intersection of the accident was  St. Joseph Parkway and Main Street and occurred at  2:15 p.m.  19 people were sent to the hospital following the crash.  No serious injuries were sustained.

Bus driver, Debra Harrison, has been suspended without pay pending completion of the investigation of the crash.  Harrison has had 5 prior accidents since April 2007 with only one that was her fault.  She has also gone to counseling for a violation in November 2008 and a right turn on red light in November 2009.

A similar bus and light rail crash occurred at the same intersection on Feb. 8 which is causing further review of traffic signal lights by Metro officials to make sure they are working properly.  The prior accident also shows the bus driver, Reginald Rideout, to have run a red light.  He was also suspended and currently is on medical leave.

The traffic signals were reviewed following the Feb. 8 accident and found to be working properly.
