Lawsuit Filed Against Football Coach over Head Injuries

8 February 2010 No Comment

EAST ST. LOUIS – A lawsuit was filed by a mother of a high school football player against her son’s football coach claiming that her son sustained permanent, stroke-causing brain injuries because the coach made him play even after complaining of a headache.

Shanai McLorn is seeking $200,000 in compensation.

The lawsuit was filed against East St. Louis Senior High coach Darren Sunkett alleging that the coach disregarded the safety of his players.

According to the suit, even after Demond Hunt Jr. complained of a headache and signs of a concussion, Sunkett still ordered him to go out and play. The suit also claims that Hunt broke his collarbone in July of 2008 when Sunkett ordered him to tackle a teammate while neither of them were wearing any protective gear. Hunt also experienced a series of seizures and strokes after his blood vessel burst in his brain.

McLorn is also seeking at least $50,000 for each of the petition’s four counts.
