Lawsuit Filed Against Beyonce by Abercrombie
Clothing giant Abercrombie & Fitch Co. has filed a lawsuit against singer Beyonce Knowles for her upcoming fragrance.
According to the federal lawsuit filed on Tuesday in Columbus, Ohio, the soon-to-be launched fragrance by Beyonce under the name Sasha Fierce may interfere with the sales of Abercrombie’s own fragrance called Fierce.
Abercrombie said it has sold more than $190 million worth of fragrance under the Fierce name and is expecting $69 million in sales for 2009.
The lawsuit is seeking to stop the launch of Beyonce’s fragrance because of potential trademark infringement, unfair competition and deceptive trade practices.
Records show that A&F has started selling the Fierce brand since 2002 and has trademarked the name in 2003.
Abercrombie said that it has sent a cease and desist letter to Beyonce but claims the singer still pursue the name.
The fragrance’s Sasha Fierce branding is from Beyonce’s album “I am … Sasha Fierce” which debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart.
Representatives of Knowles did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
