CBS Producer Arrested in David Letterman Extortion Plot
Award winning producer Robert Joe Halderman was arrested by authorities after demanding $2 million from T.V. show host David Letterman to keep him from revealing secrets.
The 51-year-old “48 Hours” producer was indicted Friday on charges of trying to blackmail Letterman. Halderman sent Letterman a letter saying he needed $2 million in order to stay quiet about the hosts’ sexual affairs with his female staffers. charged with one count of attempted grand larceny – punishable by up to 5-to-15 years in jail.
Letterman notified his attorney about the extortion plot and the attorney then contacted the police. They set up a sting in order to capture Halderman. On one of the meetings, Letterman’s attorney was wearing a mic to record everything. The police were standing by in the next room and as soon as the fake check was handed, the police rushed in to arrest Halderman.
Letterman confessed about the affairs during his show.
“This morning, I did something I’ve never done in my life,” Letterman said. “I had to go downtown and testify before a grand jury. … I had to tell them all the creepy things I had done.”
“I have had sex with women who work for me on this show.”
Reports say that the producer was in need of cash because he was ordered to pay $6,800 in child and spousal support for three years in his 2004 divorce settlement.
