SAN DIEGO – A 4-year old girl is killed and her father injured after the bicycle they were riding was hit by a trolley Sunday evening.

The child, identified as Veronica Ramirez of Chula Vista, was pronounced dead at Rady Children’s Hospital in Kearny Mesa.

The accident happened after 6:30 p.m. Sunday in the westbound lanes of L Street at a railroad crossing.

Witnesses say that father, who was carrying the girl as a passenger, attempted to cross the tracks while the rail guard was lowered and crossing signals were activated. The trolley hit the bicycle and they were thrown 40 feet from the accident.

The 34-year old father was taken to a San Diego hospital for possible internal injuries and a broken hip. His name was not immediately released.
